Not every kitchen has one of these. Growing up my mom never had one and still doesn't but I bought one for my wife for Mother's day one year and a replacement for it last year at Christmas. The bread maker at our house is used weekly and sometimes several times a day.
It is used for various breads – pizza dough, dough for fry bread, dough for buns, dough for bread sticks, etc. Of course all these things could be made by hand but the machine is nice.
